Birthstone challenge - January: YSL La Laque n. 146 Grenat moiré - Shimmering garnet [swatch]

Welcome to the first post of a new series, that will follow us through all 2014!

Thanks to Ere Kanezawa (that suggested and organized the challenge), once a month me and my nailblogger friends will post about the corresponding "birthstone" (themed swatch or nail art).

Let's start with January and its birthstone: garnet (that symbolizes a light heart, loyalty and enduring affections)! I used the occasion to pick an old polish of mine: YSL "La Laque" n. 146 Grenat moiré - Shimmering garnet (that I bought seven years ago)!

Its name explains perfectly finish and shade of this polish (even if garnets actually exist in all kind of colors). Two coats in my pictures, I must say that its perfect application (considering how old the polish was) really impressed me!! And I really like it on me: classic but not boring!

Benvenuti/e al primo appuntamento di una serie che ci accompagnerà tutto l'anno! Grazie a Ere Kanezawa, che ha proposto e organizzato la challenge, ogni mese io e le mie smaltamiche posteremo uno smalto/nail art a tema "birthstone" ovvero pietra del mese.

Iniziamo con gennaio e il corrispondente granato. Mi è sembrata l'occasione perfetta per tirare fuori dal cassetto uno smalto comprato nel dicembre del 2006. Si tratta di un YSL "La Laque" e precisamente il n. 146 Grenat moiré - Shimmering garnet. 

Il nome traduce benissimo il tipo di finitura e colore (anche se tecnicamente i granati possono essere di varie tonalità, non solo rosso cupo); tra l'altro devo dire che, nonostante l'età, lo smalto si è rivelato ancora perfetto in termini di applicazione (qui due mani). Mi è ri-piaciuto molto: classico ma comunque molto interessante!

Discontinued Day: YSL Vernis Laque Pur n. 43 Mauve pigment - Deep purple [swatch]

Discontinued Day!! Today I picked really an antique of mine: a YSL polish I bought at the end of 2002. It's Vernis Laque Pur n. 43 Mauve pigment - Deep purple (I found the twin name really charming, at that time). It's a tricky-to-picture purple with magenta and blue shimmer; not so peculiar (considering the polishes I'm used to wear now), but then I really adored it (it's not noticeable in my pics, but there's only 1/4 left in the bottle).

What's more this polish proves that (if properly stored) these products can have quite a long life span: here I applied two coats, after adding a couple drops of thinner (please never ever use acetone to thin your polishes) and still it was a little bit viscous, but after 11 years I really couldn't blame it for that!

Trivia: I found the yellow price tag at the bottom of the box (yep, I kept that one, too): I paid it 14,80€ (quite expensive, but those were the "one polish a season" years)!

Per il Discontinued Day di oggi tiro fuori un pezzo veramente storico: uno smalto YSL comprato a fine 2002. Si tratta del Vernis Laque Pur n. 43: Mauve pigment - Deep purple (ai tempi mi pareva una figata il doppio nome francese/inglese).

E' un viola (capricciosissimo da fotografare) con shimmer blu e magenta; adesso non mi sembra niente di particolarmente originale, ma quella volta ne ero follemente innamorata (non si nota nelle foto, ma ne è rimasto solo un quarto nella boccetta).

Questo "reperto" comunque è la prova del fatto che, se adeguatamente conservati, gli smalti possono durare parecchio. Per lo swatch ho dato due passate dopo aver aggiunto due gocce di thinner apposito (mai e poi mai usare acetone per diluire gli smalti), lo smalto era ancora viscoso, ma dopo quasi undici anni (essendo anche stato aperto parecchio) non posso proprio lamentarmi!

Curiosità: sulla scatola (perché ovviamente ho conservato anche quella) c'era ancora l'etichetta gialla del prezzo: € 14,80 (ai tempi era davvero una bella cifra, ma compravo due-tre smalti all'anno)!

In giro per profumerie...Going round the shops

Last Friday, “thanks” to a railway transport strike, I spent a couple hours in a different city, doing some window shopping and “tester swatching”. Here is what I tried:

Venerdì scorso, “grazie” allo sciopero di Trenitalia, ho passato un paio d'ore in un'altra città, guardando le vetrine e provando qualche tester:

• Collistar #69 Verde Lamè Mat

two coats, nice emerald green with silver shimmer - dries satin

due mani, un color smeraldo con microglitter argento; carino, una volta asciutto ha una finitura satinata

Direct sunlight - Sole diretto

• YSL #43 Wintergreen [YSL Jardin de Minuit A-I 2011/2012]

a greenish teal with ligher green shimmers, really streaky after first coat, perfect after second one (it's a pity all shimmers are barely visible)

un verde blu con shimmer verde chiaro, dopo la prima mano era strisciosissimo, perfetto dopo la seconda (peccato non si vedano quasi per niente i brillini)

Indoors, with flash - Interno, con flash

• YSL #44 Moonlight Blue [YSL Jardin de Minuit A-I 2011/2012]

blue with suble shimmers, I loved it after first coat, it was jelly-perfect but I decided to apply another one to see deeper color

blu con shimmer molto discreti, mi è piaciuto un sacco alla prima passata, era perfetto come copertura e sembrava un jelly; ne ho comunque aggiunta un'altra per vedere il colore “pieno”

• YSL #128 Black Indigo [YSL The Black Collection]

Tester polish was super dense, I applied just one coat but it was so thick it was worth at least three of usual ones. Purple with fuchsia shimmer in bottle, really dark on nail.

Dalla boccetta sembrava un viola con shimmer fucsia ma era così denso che la passata che ho steso valeva almeno tre di quelle normali, ed è venuto molto scuro.

BTW all YSL were a little bit dull...They look much better with top coat! 

A proposito, gli YSL erano un pochino spenti, molto più carini dopo una passata di top coat!

Overcast - Cielo nuvoloso

• Dior 871 Apparat [Les Rouges Or - Christmas 2011]

In the bottle: very interesting burgundy red with diffuse golden shimmer, quite disappointing on nails (I find it pretty ordinary, I expected something more, it's a Dior polish, after all) – tester brush had a weirdly strong cat tongue shape (not really handy).

Questo l'ho swatchato da Sephora, con N tra commesse, truccatrici e uomini security che mi tenevano d'occhio (avrò avuto l'aria sospetta): bellissimo rosso bordeaux screziato d'oro nella boccetta, dopo due mani si rivela un rosso secondo me abbastanza banale; il pennello del tester aveva una forma lingua di gatto abbastanza pronunciata e non particolamente comoda.

Considering prices of these polishes I just admired them (my favourite of the bunch is YSL #43 anyway) but I could't keep my wallet still; at the beginning of the week Ere Kanezawa informed me that new Catrices Welcome to Las Vegas came out (one went already sold out in the meantime) so I managed to buy a couple of them (Drama Queen and Alluring Night) plus After Eight from permanent collection.
PS: today I tried to set Italian and English versions apart using also background color, what do you think about it?

Considerando i prezzi di questi smalti mi sono limitata ad osservarli (il mio preferito è il #43 di YSL) ma non sono riuscita a evitare del tutto gli acquisti: grazie alla soffiata di Ere Kanezawa sapevo che erano usciti  i Catrice Welcome to Las Vegas (uno nel frattempo era già esaurito), così sono andata a cercarli e ne ho presi due (Drama Queen e Alluring Night), più After Eight della collezione permanente.

A proposito di nomi strambi Catrice, avevate visto Beavis and Mud-Head??
PS: oggi esperimento grafico sulla doppia versione italiano inglese...Come vi pare?
