ABC Challenge: S - E.l.f. Smoky Brown

 

OMG it's ABC Challenge day! This is (almost) my first thought (after "I have to get up or I'll miss the train") on Mondays and Thursdays (and the days before, as I have no "ready to post" swatches of the scheduled polishes)!

This time I'll show you an old E.l.f. polish you already saw on my taupe comparison (:-0 these were my nails 18 months ago) and my brown wheel #1: Smoky Brown.

It's a nice brown-taupe (slightly rosy), I think that there are a lot of similar shades around, so it's no big deal if it has been discontinued (as Eyeko and Essence polishes I compared). This happens when polishes remain for too long in the untrieds (or "to be swatched") box!!

In case you're interested about application, the old style brush made it easy, but  it took three coats to obtain an even result, as after first coat the nail was really blotchy and even the second one didn't solve completely the patch issue (check the picture at the bottom of the post - not satisfying).

BTW E.l.f. (at least here in Italy) raised their prices last May: polishes went from 1,70 to 3,00€, so they're not that cheap anymore :-(

Aaaaah ABC challenge day!! Questo è il pensiero che di solito mi assale le mattine dei lunedì e giovedì (nonché i giorni immediatamente antecedenti, visto che ho tutti gli smalti da fotografare). 

Oggi approfitto della S per mostrarvi il Smoky Brown della E.l.f.

L'avevamo visto in questa comparazione taupe (glissiamo sulle unghie di allora :-$) e nella ruota marrone #1, ora eccolo protagonista indiscusso del post!

Colore carino, un marrone-taupe con una punta rosata, niente di inimitabile, credo ci siano parecchi altri colori simili in giro (oltre a quelli comparati, praticamente tutti defunti tranne l'Opi). Tra l'altro ora questo non è neanche più in catalogo (così imparo a fare le recensioni dopo tanto tempo).

Veniamo alla stesura: il pennello è del vecchio tipo, l'applicazione è facile, ma dopo la prima mano è tutto una chiazza. Seconda mano: l'unghia è coperta ma l'effetto è comunque non uniforme (v. foto in fondo).

Terza mano: finalmente ci siamo! 

Tra l'altro i prezzi degli smalti E.l.f. rispetto all'anno scorso sono praticamente raddoppiati (da € 1,70 a € 3,00 a boccetta, qui il link al loro comunicato su FB), quindi non sono più tanto economici come una volta (per cui si poteva chiudere un occhio sulla passata in più).

Right after this post I decided to do a more extended taupe comparison with polishes I had "sleeping" in my stash. I apologize in advance for dry cuticles, especially on "wear test" pictures: I took them during the week (more than a month ago, nails were quite short), right after I came home from work to catch some sunlight and I didn't have the time to "pamper" skin as I usually do. This is what  I decided to compare:

Subito dopo aver effettuato questo paragone ho deciso di approfondire l'argomento taupe, aggiungendo alla comparazione altri due smalti della mia "collezione" (che detto così sembra una cosa seria :-D). Sono foto che risalgono a più di un mese fa (le mie unghe erano in fase "corto"): mi scuso in anticipo per le condizioni pietose delle pellicine, soprattutto nelle foto di "test durata", ma le avevo dovute scattare appena tornata a casa dal lavoro per avere un po' di luce naturale e quindi senza avere il tempo di "coccolarle" con creme e burri vari. Ecco cosa ho provato:

• index - indice Eyeko Posh Polish - € 5 x 8,5 ml
• middle - medio OPI Over the Taupe - in Italy € 15 x 15ml (US retail approx 6$)
• ring - anulare Essence Colour&Go 34 Walk of Fame - € 1,29 x 5ml
• pinkie - mignolo E.l.f. Smoky Brown - € 1,70 x 10ml

By twos they are quite similar, even if Essence is more watery and greyish than Eyeko and E.l.f.  is darker and "browner" than OPI.

Considering that they were all from different brands, I decided to keep them on (without adding top coat) to do a short wear test. Being aware that on my tips all polishes remain intact  just for few hours (less than 24, maybe because of my typing style, who knows) I wasn't surprised the following day, as all nails had tipwear (Eyeko less than the others, but that nail was shorter); the following days the situation didn't get worse, anyway. I didn't wait for the polish to come off in pieces or peel because on the fourth day I was really sick and tired of my taupe mani :-P

Marginal note: the price of this polishes goes from ""really cheap" to "medium-high" (at least in Italy, where OPI cost 15€) but their performance hasn't been significantly different :-/

Si nota che "a due a due" sono simili, anche se l'Essence è più liquido e leggermente più grigio dell'Eyeko, e l'E.l.f., pur assomigliando tantissimo all'OPI, è di poco più scuro e "marrone".

Visto che gli smalti sono di marche diverse, ho provato a vedere come avrebbero reagito all'usura quotidiana (senza top coat). Sottolineo che a me gli smalti si consumano tutti sulle punte dopo pochissimo (sarà per l'uso della tastiera, chi lo sa) e anche questi dopo un giorno erano già sbiaditi alle estremità (l'Eyeko un po' meno ma l'unghia era anche più corta) però non sono peggiorati particolarmente nei giorni seguenti. Non ho aspettato scheggiature e scrostature dello smalto, dopo quattro giorni ero stufa marcia della mia mano taupe ed ho tolto tutto.

Nota a margine: i prodotti appartengono a fasce di prezzo diverse (da super economico a medio alto), però la "performance" secondo me non evidenzia particolari differenze...Mah!

Another E.l.f. polish: a cool toned beige creme, very office-friendly. Quite sheer (it took 3 coats to have an opaque result) but easy to apply. I noticed it had the same "slow dry" issue I experienced on another E.l.f. creme: I applied it in the late afternoon (6 p.m.) then took pictures with electric lighting. The morning after I found sheet marks on nails (and I swear I didn't go to bed at 8 p.m.!!) so I had to apply top coat before taking further pictures (shade). Obviously I scratched my middle finger somehow in the outdoor "pictures" process so please forgive that messed nail! Did you experienced the same drying problems with E.l.f. polishes?

Un altro creme della E.l.f.: un beige chiaro con una tonalità fredda, ottimo per un risultato neutro (tipo ufficio); è abbastanza trasparente infatti per il risultato fotografato sono servite tre mani. Si stende bene, l'unica cosa negativa è l'estrema lentezza dell'asciugatura, infatti pur avendolo applicato alle sei di sera (foto con illuminazione artificale) la mattina dopo* (foto con luce naturale) ho dovuto applicare il top coat su indice, medio ed anulare per "spianare" i segni delle lenzuola (e facendo subito dopo le foto ho anche "rigato" il medio). *Giuro che non ero andata a dormire alle otto!! Che dite di questi E.l.f., asciugano così lentamente anche a voi?

A nice "hot chocolate" brown creme, opaque in two coats and really shiny. Besides the uncomfortable cap  (a short parallelepiped) I found brush a little too wide, so that the  application can be imprecise; anyway cleaning (I use a small brush) and removing is very easy.

I applied it in the evening so I had to make it dry fast. After taking the pictures I applied Seche Vite on my left hand and Essence  Dry Drops on right one. Results in next post!

Artificial light - Illuminazione artificiale

Un bel marrone caldo (come una tavoletta di quello al latte), coprente in due mani. Mi sono trovata un po' in difficoltà con l'applicazione, non tanto per la densità dello smalto quanto per il pennello, molto largo e il tappo dalla forma antiergonomica (se si può dire). Molto lucido, comunque facile anche da rimuovere (per la rifinitura della zona cuticole faccio una passata con il pennello).

Dato che l'ho messo di sera per farlo asciugare in fretta ho applicato Seche da una parte e  le gocce Essence Dry Drops dall'altra. I risultati nel prossimo post!

My first E.l.f. polish (I was really eager to test these inexpensive polishes, just 1,70€ each): I expected it to be a deep pink with golden shimmer (judging by the bottle) but after three coats (first was really sheer) here is the result: a fluo-ish pink, that dries quite "matte".

Nice application, but I found "parallelepiped" cap quite awkward.

Il mio primo Elf (ero molto curiosa dato che costano veramente poco: 1,70€)! Nella bottiglia è un rosa intenso con shimmer dorati/arancio, immaginate la mia sopresa quando ho scoperto che: la prima mano era molto trasparente e dopo altre due (comunque si vede la linea dell'unghia) il risultato era prevalentemente - gli shimmer si notavano un po' sotto il sole - un rosa leggermente "fluo" ed opaco.

Si stende comunque bene, anche se ho trovato il tappo a parallelepipedo abbastanza scomodo da impugnare.
